Josef is an incoming freshman taking Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at UP-Diliman. Having graduated with Excellence awards in Chemistry and Biology, he dreams to conduct research on personalized medicine and oncology to make healthcare for Filipinos inexpensive and accessible. Alongside this, he also aims to help foster the passion for STEM of underprivileged people and contribute to making STEM accessible to all, regardless of sex, age, and socioeconomic status.
Coming from the province, he experienced early on the inequalities in opportunities for students when it comes to STEM. Being the first student from his school to qualify for PSHS, he had no role models to look up to while studying away from home. He first became aware of the gender gap in STEM when he started joining STEM competitions, where most of the participants were always males. After being enlightened with the gender gap in STEM, he realized that many young girls also didn’t have role models in STEM. With this, he works towards a future for STEM where no one feels unwelcomed in the S&T field, where any person can find representation in the professionals in the field.
In his free time, he loves to roam around restaurants and stores to appreciate cuisines. An avid cat lover, he will take any opportunity to pet and shower with love the felines he sees when allowed. On rainy days, he spends his time binge-watching anime and teen series he put off.
